In reading both "The First Day" and "Cooling the House," I was provided with a deeper understanding of writing stories from a particular point of view. I enjoyed reading both pieces and I was able to take some of the techniques used from each piece in my own writing.
I enjoyed reading "The First Day" because it was well-written and a reality for many African Americans in the past. The story was very descriptive and helped to understand the setting and emotions of the narrator and her mother. The author did a good job in capturing the emotions, thoughts, and/or feelings of the other characters. I was able to sympathize with the mother in the story, due to the way her behaviors and actions were described.
Although I enjoyed reading "Cooling the House," I was sometimes confused. I felt as if the ideas may have been slightly disorganized or a tad unclear. However, the perspective from an air conditioner was very unique. The author was able to capture the thoughts of an air conditioner very well.
